The White Peak

The geology of the White Peak is mainly limestone. The limestone is Carboniferous and was formed between 363 and 325 million years ago when the area lay just south of the equator covered by a shallow, warm, tropical sea. Following the last ice age, the gritstone layer was lost to reveal the limestone underneath as the glacial meltwater carved out many dramatic steep-sided valleys and gorges.
